28 new Covid-19 cases reported, the highest daily infection in months

The National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control reported 28 new cases of Covid-19 today bringing the total to 88.

Twenty six of the newly confirmed cases are Vientiane residents and linked to Case 59, a 25-years-old student at the National University of Laos who has caught the virus from two Thai men.

The other two cases were identified as returning workers from Thailand. They are being treated and quarantined in Champassak, the southernmost province of Laos.

Laos currently has 39 active cases including 31 in Vientiane, three in Champassak, two in Savannakhet, and one each in Borikhamxay, Khammuan and Saravan.

“As for those who have had close contact with the infected, we have collected their samples for Covid-19 test and now we are waiting for the results. In the meantime, we are continuing to keep surveillance and monitor their symptoms and quarantine them for 14 days,” said Dr Phonepadith Sangsayalath, Head of the National Centre for Laboratory and Epidemiology, Ministry of Health.

The National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control has established four more test points at various locations in Vientiane namely: Bungkhayong Indoor Stadium, Chao Anouvong Stadium, Vientiane-Ho Chi Minh Secondary School, and Lao-Vietnam Friendship Secondary School.

Since January 2020, over 149,000 have been tested for Covid-19.
