44 killed in road accidents during Lao New Year celebration

Forty four lives were claimed and over 570 injured in road traffic accidents over 7 days of Lao New Year (Pi Mai) celebration – Apr 11-17.

Col. Kongsy Souvannatoum, Director, Department of Traffic Police, Ministry of Public Security, told a press conference in Vientiane on Apr 20 that Champassak recorded the highest number of road accidents at 50, followed by Savannakhet 36, and Vientiane 33.

Meanwhile most of the deaths from road accidents were reported in Vientiane – 9, Champassak 7 and Xayaboury 6. Borikhamxay and Savannakhet reported five deaths each.

“If we compared with last year, we would see an increase of 250 cases. In 2020, there were only 88 road accidents and 22 deaths,” said Col. Kongsy Souvannatoum.

Most of the road accidents recorded during the Lao New Year celebration were caused by drunk driving (111 cases), and speedy driving 92, said Col. Kongsy Souvannatoum.
