5th Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge expected to be opened in 2024

The 5th Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge spanning the Mekong between Borikhamxay Province of Laos and Bung Kan Province of Thailand is expected to be completed and opened in early 2024.

Since October 2022, 60 per cent of the bridge construction plan has been carried out.

The construction is progressing faster than expected as the middle section of the bridge expected to be completed by the middle of the year.

Authorities expect that the bridge will boost border trade between Laos and Thailand and enhance Thailand’s status as a regional trade hub.

The bridge will be connected with National Road 13 South in Borikhamxay and Highway 222 in Bung Kan.

It will form a regional route connecting Laos with Thailand and Vietnam, thus facilitating trade between the three neighbours as well as other GMS countries – Cambodia, Myanmar and China.
