Laos Celebrates 79th Anniversary of Lao Diplomacy Day


(KPL) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of peace, independence, friendship, and cooperation in diplomatic missions, urging diplomats to continue their commitment to these values.

In his remarks at the celebration of the 79th Anniversary of Lao Diplomacy Day, DPM Saleumxay stated, ‘Diplomats must possess extensive knowledge, be skilled in international relations, understand economics, law, foreign languages, culture, religion, and technology, and be capable and flexible negotiators and communicators.’

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a banquet to mark the 79th anniversary of Lao Diplomacy Day (Oct 12, 1945 – 2024) on Oct 16, 2024.

The event was attended by Party members, senior ministry officials, former ambassadors, retired diplomats, and relevant officials.

Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay also highlighted key milestones in Laos’ diplomatic history over the past 79 years, noting that the country has establ
ished diplomatic relations with over 150 countries. Laos is represented internationally with 28 embassies, 3 permanent representative offices, 10 general consulates, and 17 consulates.

In addition, the DPM underscored the success of Laos’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024, which was held under the theme ‘ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.’ He praised the successful hosting of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings, which he noted have elevated Laos’ role and reputation on both regional and international stages.

DPM Saleumxay also expressed appreciation for the contributions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff, whose efforts ensured the success of the Lao PDR’s ASEAN Chairmanship and the hosting of the summits.
