Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR Takeshi Hikihara hosted a reception party for the Lao alumni of the Japanese Language Programme for Foreign-Service Officers and Public Officials in Vientiane Capital.
The Japanese Language Programme for Foreign-Service Officers and Public Officials is a scheme for young Foreign-Service Officers, and other Public Officials who are expected to be engaged in duties which require a certain level of fluency in the Japanese language.
Each year officers and officials are invited to Japan, by the Japan Foundation Kansai Centre in Osaka, to participate in an 8-month intensive training course in Japanese language, and activities designed to promote understanding in Japanese culture and society.
The programme started in Laos in 1981 and has been running for 37 years, with Lao officers joining in 1989. There has been a total of 38 Lao participants with one or two officers or officials from Laos participating every year.
During the reception Mr Takeshi expressed his hope that the alumni would maintain good connections with Japanese residents in Laos on their return.
He also expected that they would be able to use the Japanese language in their daily work, continue to expand their knowledge, share their knowledge with their colleagues and support cooperation between Japan and Laos. The reception was attended by returned attendees and other officers from related ministries.
