The ministry of Health has expected that 1.5 million people or around 22 per cent of population in the country will be vaccinated against Covid-19 this year before jumping to 70% in 2023.
Jan 27 witnessed 320 health workers at Friendship Hospital and Setthathirath Hospital receiving shots of Covid-19 vaccine Vero Cell developed by a Chinese company Sinopharm.
Almost 300 frontline officials including health workers and those working at border crossings and quarantine centres were vaccinated against Covid-19 last November. These included 125 officials receiving required second doses.
Non vaccine recipients have developed abnormalities.
Today, the Ministry of Health launched Covid-19 vaccination campaign for medical workers who are at higher risk of being infected as they face suspected patients and Covid-19 infected people. They are a group of priority as our vaccines donated by friendly countries are limited,” said Minister of Health Bounkong Sihavong.
On Jan 24, Sinofarm’s experts in cooperation with Chinese embassy in the Lao PDR held a workshop to exchange lessons with Lao medical workers. An emergency vaccination was carried out during the workshop for medical workers, border crossing officials, quarantine centre staff with over 420 doses of Covid-19 vaccine used.
“In the first stage, when vaccine is limited, the priority groups of Covid-19 vaccination will be those at risk of being infected by SARS-CoV-2, frontline medical workers, the elderly and those with chronic medical problems, those working at quarantine centres, those tend to have frequent traveling,” said Dr Phonepaseuth Ounaphom, Director of Department of Hygiene and Health Promotion, Ministry of Health.
“Hence, on this occasion I would like people of all strata to understand that the government is concerned about their health and won’t leave anyone behind. It will attempt to procure the vaccine so that everyone can access Covid-19 vaccines,” said Dr Phonepaseuth.
