ASEAN member countries have agreed to further cooperation on disaster management.
This statement was made by the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Mr Khampheng Xaysompheng, at the 30th ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management Meeting and Related Meetings on April 4.
ASEAN Community Building aims to integrate and make ASEAN more competent in international fora, including joint efforts to respond to new issues that are occurring at regional and international levels.
We have to cooperate in managing the disasters caused by climate change in the world and in our region. The frequent and severe occurrence of natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, droughts, epidemics and others, brings about the loss of human lives and damage to property and a severe negative impact on socio-economic infrastructure, agro-ecology and natural resources, leading to obstruction and the slowing down of economic development in the world, especially in the ASEAN Region, said Mr Khampheng.
So far, the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management has played a key role in implementing the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER) and the ASEAN Declaration of One ASEAN One Response: ASEAN Response as One in the region and outside the region through project cooperation among ASEAN and dialogue partners.
Lao PDR has prioritized disaster management activities in its national social economic plan, with a strategic plan on building sustainability-oriented National Social-Economic growth emphasizing on environmental protection and increased preparedness in responding to natural disasters. It is also implementing the social welfare strategic plan 2020 in particular, programmes on disaster response, emergency relief and recovery, as well as translating the regional and international agreements on disaster management.
