(KPL) The Australian Embassy has become a founding sponsor of Lao PDR’s international art exhibition and prize ELEVATIONS LAOS | Exhibition + Art Prize.
This initiative is a collaboration between the Spellbrook Foundation and the Australian Embassy to support and stimulate the development of contemporary art and emerging artists in the Lao PDR.
‘The Australian Embassy is very proud to be a founding sponsor of Laos PDR’s international art exhibition and prize Elevations Laos, and I am hopeful this initiative will inspire more emerging Lao artists and art students to express themselves through their art’, said Ambassador Jean-Bernard Carrasco.
ELEVATIONS LAOS | Exhibition has been scheduled for 9 November 2018 through 16 January 2019 at i:cat Gallery in Vientiane.
This year’s Exhibition entitled ‘Depths’ will exhibit contemporary works of Lao artists Souliya Phoumivong, Bounpaul Phothyzan and Tcheu Siong.
There will also be works of artists from Southeast Asian countries including Wawi Navarozza of the Phillipines, Arin Rungjang and Sutthirat Supaparinya fromThailand, Busui Ajaw from Myanmar, Than Sok Cambodia, Anne Samat Malaysia, Guo-Liang Tan Singapore, Nguyen Trinh Thi Vietnam, Shen Xin from China and Pao Her, Hmong-USA.
The inaugural of ELEVATIONS LAOS | Exhibition is inspired by the first-ever inclusion of the three Lao artists in the (9th) Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT9) in Brisbane, Australia which is running from 24 November 2018 to 28 April 2019.
There will be over 80 artists featured at this event from more than 30 countries.
ELEVATIONS LAOS has multiple Public Programmes throughout the course of the exhibition, including a signature Symposium on 10 November.
The Symposium was designed to provide an introduction of Elevations Laos, and an opportunity for emerging Lao artists, and art students to exchange ideas and experiences in the contemporary arts in Laos and in Southeast Asia, China and USA.
The programme will be co-convened by Elevations Laos Founding Artistic Director and Curator Erin Gleeson and Art Historian and Curator Dr. Roger Nelson with moderated artist panels by leading scholars and curators including Zoe Butt (Vietnam), Biung Ismahasan (Taiwan), and Dr. Chairat Polmuk (Thailand).
ELEVATIONS LAOS | Art Prize will be awarded next year to an emerging artist from Laos. The finalists and prizewinner will have an exhibition and the prize winner will receive a commission to produce artwork for the second ELEVATIONS LAOS | Exhibition scheduled for 2020.
