Bokeo provincial authorities have summoned representatives of Chinese banana farming companies and warned them to take proper actions to address problems related to their banana business.
Banana farming business by Chinese companies has attracted concerns after a number of issues have reportedly resulted from the failure of banana farmers to comply with established rules including drug abuse, robbery, labour abuse, and chemical contamination in natural rivers.
It is necessary to address the problems in an urgent manner. The entrepreneurs shall respect rules, and comply with the agreements they have signed recently. If their violation is repeated, stringent measures will be used or they may be banned from doing their farming business, said Mr Chanpheng Keuthkong, Director of Inspection Department of Bokeo Province.
The province authorities said that the banana farming by Chinese companies has been limited to around 6,000 ha as the province currently allow the Chinese companies to continue their farming on their existing farmlands until their concessions are over and they are not allowed to expand their banana farmlands.
