(KPL) Hundreds of primary and secondary school students, teachers and parents turned out at annual event Book Festival, the fifteen of its kind, held at National Library, Vientiane, on Mar 23-24 drawing several well-known publishers in the country.
The objective of the event was to raise awareness of reading promotion for students, parents and general public members and the publication of children’s books, dharma books and general books, make general public members realize the importance of reading.
Co-organized by the Vientiane Department of Education and Sports, National Library, and Action with Lao Children (ALC), this year’s edition saw the presence of Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Bouangeun Saphouvong.
The event also provided opportunity to cartoonists, writers, publishers to exchange lessons on gaining access to target readers.
Storytelling contest, role play, and book related Q and A were also held at the event.
While delivering remarks, Director of the National Library Khanthamaly Yangnouvong briefed the participants about the efforts made since 1990 by the National Library, the Ministry of Education and Sports and UNICEF and relevant sectors to promote reading among target children.
Equipping children with reading skills needs cooperation from several sectors namely family, school and community to organize reading promotion activities. Organizing reading promotion activities will make children interested in and realize the importance of reading because reading is a creativity of human to satisfy their curiosity about things happening in their life or those happening around them, said Ms Khanthamaly.
