CAAP eyes Davao airport runway repair completion by 1st week of May

MANILA: The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is targeting the completion of the Davao International Airport runway repair by the first week of May, instead of May 31.

The runway asphalt overlay project that includes the removal of a 2-inch thick damaged asphalt pavement is now 36.67 percent complete, according to CAAP.

‘We are expediting the completion of the project. We ask for understanding from affected passengers because the runway really needs to be repaired, and we cannot afford to risk damaging it, which could pose safety concerns.’ CAAP-Davao Area Manager Rex Obcena said in a news release Wednesday.

The application of emulsified asphalt tack coat, laying of hot bituminous mixture, and repainting of affected runway markings are also part of the project.

The runway is closed daily, from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m., since Jan. 29. Closing period was reduced to four hours from six hours to minimize impact on operations.

Meanwhile, CAAP said only six out of 84 daily flights are affected by the
runway closure.

Due to the ongoing repairs, Philippine Airlines recently adjusted arrival and departure of four Davao flights until June 1.
