The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare has commenced the construction of its new office in Dong Makkhay village, Xaythany district, Vientiane, moving from its former location in the heart of Vientiane Capital which is over 50 years old.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Jan 28 in attendance of Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Mr Khampheng Xaysompheng, President of the Asian Investment, Development & Construction Company Mr Phuedsapha Phoummasack (the project contractor), and relevant officials.
The construction of the new ministry, which began in August 2016, is expected to take about 2 years to complete, said Mr Phuedsapha.
Mr Viengkhong Chanthalangsy, a member of the responsibility committee for the construction project, said that the new office is designed to be a 5-storey building on 20,000 square metres of the total four hectare area and falls under the government’s capitalization policy amounting to 97 billion kip (US$12 million).
Mr Viengkhong claimed that the move from the old office of the ministry from Xiengyeun village, Chanthabouly district to the new location is because the old building, which has been used since 1963, is in poor condition.
The old office was neither repaired nor expanded because it has been renovated many times.
