The winners of the cover dance contest ‘Cool and Kawaii Japan 2017’ were announced in Vientiane on Feb 18 with the team Miss Drink grabbing the first prize.
The first and second runners-up of the event were Morrisetter and KidNapPer respectively.
The winner was awarded 1 million kip (about US$125) and a paid trip to Japan. The first runner up was presented 800,000 kip and second runner up was awarded 500,000 kip.
The cover dance drew teen dance teams from across the country including All of Sala Crew, Walking Street, UCHIWA and HopPer-B.
The event aimed to promote mutual understandings at the grassroots level between people in the two countries by introducing Japanese pop culture such as J-Pop music and dance covers, and cosplay (performances in costumes based on animation characters), among others.
During the event, Gypsy Queen, a Japanese rock band with ten years experience playing their music in Laos and exchanging with Lao artists, performed their music with its powerful beat as the main guest performers.
A special feature was the newly released Lao-Japanese song “My Hometown in Asia” in collaboration with celebrated Lao singers Aluna, Overdance Kai and Tar Apacts.
The song was sung by singers of both countries to commemorate this special event.
Asakura Kate from Japan, a singer who is well known for her performances as a female humanoid robot (Hatsune-miku) cosplayer, gave enjoyable performances in colorful hair and costumes.
A.H.O. and Logeq, both techno-music players from Japan, gave a unique arrangement of Sakura Sakura (a famous Japanese cherry blossom song) and other songs while dressed in distinctive black costumes.
Cool and Kawaii Japan 2017 was organized by the Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR, in cooperation with the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, and the Japan Foundation Asia Center.
