The annual Elephant Festival has been scheduled to take place for one day on Feb 13 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vice Governor of Xayaboury Province Phetphixay Sounvilai told a press conference on Jan 17 that only a small number of people will be allowed to attend the event.
The Elephant Festival, the 15th of its kind, will be held in accordance with a time-honoured tradition.
“It is at high risk this year as the Covid-19 outbreak continues to spread and it is difficult to control the disease,” said the vice governor.
The coming annual event will not be organised as a big event as usual. The number of its attendees has been reduced to merely 200-300, and there will be no trade fairs and entertainment events.
An almsgiving ceremony, an elephant parade, a Baci ceremony, and an elephant buffet will be featured at the event to be participated by about 16-18 elephants.
