Deputy Minister of Foreign Affair Phoxay Khaykhamphithoun received in Vientiane on Tuesday a letter of credence from Mr Marc Andre Prost, new Representative of the World Food Programme (WFP) to the Lao PDR.
At the amicable talks, the deputy minister expressed his appreciation for the good relationship and cooperation between WFP and the Lao PDR, and his confidence that under Prost’s leadership, WFP Lao PDR will promote its cooperation with the government and continue to help it implement the priorities set forth in the 9th National Socio-Economic Development Plan and the strategic plan of cooperation between the government of Laos and WFP.
The deputy minister called on WFP to continue to support Laos’ efforts to implement development priorities such as: sustainable development goals and other international development agendas as well as Laos’ planned graduation from the least developed country status in 2026.
WFP has played an important role in promoting nutrition, food security, and disaster response efforts in the Lao PDR. It has committed to support development priorities worth 79 million US dollars for the period of 2022-2026.
In reply, Mr Marc Andre Prost assured the host that WFP will continue to increase cooperation with the government of Laos to facilitate the implementation of the country’s development priorities.
WFP is an international organization within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing food aid to countries around the world and is considered the largest international humanitarian organization in the world by providing assistance to millions of people in more than 120 countries.
