Foreign Minister Mr Saleumxay Kommasith and his delegation visited Brunei from March 14-16 in response to an invitation from Brunei Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng.
At a bilateral meeting held on March 16 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Mr Saleumxay and the host official expressed their agreement to strengthen cooperation between the two countries focusing especially on trade and investment, agriculture, energy, human resource development, and exchange visits between officials of the two countries at all levels.
They highly valued the relationship and cooperation between the two countries, noting the productive outcomes resulting from the regular exchange of visits by government and state leaders.
The Lao side thanked the government of Brunei Darussalam for its support of Laos, including the construction of new buildings for the Lao Women’s Union, the National Rehabilitation Centre for People with Disabilities, schools, the Somsanga Drug Addict Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, and the Sikeuth Indoor Sports Complex, with a combined cost of US$4 million.
Laos has also benefited from Brunei’s assistance in human resource development under the Brunei-US English Language Enhancement Project for ASEAN, which has been in progress for five years.
The Lao side also thanked Brunei for attending the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane and expressed gratitude for the Brunei government’s financial support for Laos’ ASEAN chairmanship 2016 and its hosting of the 9th ASEM Summit in 2012.
At the meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, the two sides also discussed regional and international issues of common interest.
Mr Saleumxay and his delegation also paid a courtesy call to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at the Istana Palace.
