(KPL) Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith representing the Lao government has pinned a friendship medal on outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Mr Takeshi Hikihara in recognition of his contributions to enhancing the relations and cooperation between Laos and Japan.
At a ceremony held in Vientiane on Aug 19, the foreign minister highly valued the efforts made by the diplomat in promoting exchange visits between the high-ranking officials of the two countries over recent years.
He also expressed gratitude to the Japanese government upon its assistance and support to the Lao PDR, especially on infrastructure development, agriculture, health, education and sport, science and technology, UXO, culture and tourism, and humanitarian aid.
In reply, the Japanese ambassador expressed thanks to the Lao government and people as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the support and cooperation given to him over recent years.
Currently, Japan ranks 13th in the list of largest foreign investors in the Lao PDR with 160 Japanese companies operational in the country. The bilateral trade between Laos and Japan reached US$ 205 million last year.
