Inter-Korean Summit To Focus On Foundation For Settlement Of Peace

At the Inter-Korean Summit scheduled for Apr 27, leaders of North and South Koreas will focus on laying the foundation for denuclearization and the settlement of peace on the Korean Peninsula, according to a diplomat.

The summit will take place in Panmunjeom, previously seen as a symbol of division and confrontation, on the border between the two Koreas.

As there has been a long hiatus in inter-Korean relations, it (the summit) will be very meaningful for the two leaders to build mutual trust through candid and heart-to-heart discussions, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Lao PDR Sung Soon Shin told the media in Vientiane on Tuesday.

The meeting will cover a wide range of issues, including denuclearization and the settlement of peace on the Korean Peninsula as well as progress in inter-Korean relations.

South Korea’s utmost efforts for denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula, including President Moon’s sincere efforts through the Berlin Initiative, were well received by North Korea, according to the ambassador.

North Korea announced last year that it had completed its nuclear programme. However, when the South Korean delegation visited the North, Kim Jong-un expressed his willingness for denuclearization and to engage in dialogue with the United States.

Our government will exert utmost efforts to encourage the North to make a resolution for denuclearization during the Inter-Korean Summit and U.S.-North Korea Summit to follow through on its decision, said the ambassador.
