Japanese-Funded School Construction Project in Oudomxay Province

(KPL) The Government of Japan has handed over a school which was financed and constructed by the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) in Namo District, Oudomxay Province.

The handover ceremony was held on 16 January, 2019 in Oudomxay Province between Dr. Khamphanh Pheuyavong, Governor of Oudomxay Province and Mr Takeshi Hikihara, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR.

The agreement for the Grant Aid project, amounting to 145,943 US dollars, was made in March 2017.

At the Phoukhua Secondary School, the temporary classrooms were in bad condition and they had required frequent repair work. Therefore, the project was formulated to improve the educational environment by constructing two additional blocks of four fully furnished classrooms.

During the ceremony, Mr. Takeshi Hikihara noted a significant improvement had been achieved and expressed his hope that the Phoukhua Secondary School would be used and maintained in good condition for a long time.

Japan has for many years supported the efforts of the Lao Government to improve basic education. Through this GGP grant scheme, Japan has funded 296 education projects in the Lao PDR since 1989, including 174 primary schools and 70 lower and upper secondary schools.
