Japan’s “One Village, One Product” Concept Disseminated

More than 150 Lao officials and Lao students from the JapanAlumniOrganization of Laos(JAOL) and the ASEAN Council of Japan Alumni (ASCOJA) met at the International Symposium of Asia JapanAlumni(ASJA) in Vientiane Capital under theme of “One District, One Product” (ODOP).

The meeting was held on November 26 in the presence of President of the Laos-Japan Friendship Association Mr Ponmek Dalaloy, Ambassador of Japan to Lao PDR Mr Takeshi Hikihara, and Secretary General of Asia Japan Alumni (ASJA) International Jiro Sato.

The objective of meeting was to exchange opinions on challenges and difficulties experienced in the development “One Village, One Product,” (OVOP), an idea initially developed in Oita Province in the southern part of Japan. The concept was subsequently expanded worldwide and throughout ASEAN including the Lao PDR.

The history of Japan’s OVOP, or “Isson Ippin” in Japan, which is being implemented in ASEAN member countries, was explained to participants and followed by a discussion of challenges faced and the direction for development cooperation in the future.

This was the second year that the meeting was held and featured a different set of topics than in the previous meeting. Future meetings will rotate among ASEAN member countries.

JAOL is a non-profit organization established in 2001 for Lao nationals that previously studied in Japan.The meeting was organized by Japanese Alumni of Lao in cooperation with ASCOJA and supported by ASJA International.
