Chairman of the Cultural and Social Committee of the National Assembly Somphou Douangsavanh has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star of Japan.
Mr Somphou Douangsavanh was presented the award by the Japanese Ambassador to the Lao PDR Takeshi Hikihara in Vientiane Capital on Oct 3, 2018.
At the award ceremony Ambassador Hikihara appreciated the contributions of Mr Somphou to promoting the parliamentary exchanges, and friendly relations and cooperation between Japan and the Lao PDR.
Mr Somphou Douangsavanh was born in Xieng Khuang Province in 1954. After obtaining a Doctoral Degree from Moscow Lenin Youth Institute, he joined the National Assembly and served in various important positions, most notably as the President of the Lao-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association, between 2011 and 2016.
In 2016, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Cultural and Social Committee of the National Assembly and has served in the position ever since.
During his tenure as President of the Lao-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association, Mr. Somphou Douangsavanh made invaluable contributions to fruitful cooperation between the two countries through, among others, active exchanges with numerous members of the Japanese parliament.
He also enthusiastically supported and took part in numerous cultural activities, and receptions organised by the Embassy of Japan and relevant Japanese organisations.
The award ceremony was attended by Ms. Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun, Minister of Education and Sports and President of the Laos-Japan Friendship Association, as well as VIP guests from the National Assembly and related Ministries.
