Lanexang United FC, a local football team of Laos, defeated SHB Da Nang of Vietnam 2-1 at the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2016 for a semi-final spot.
The inaugural match of the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2016 was held at the Chao Anouvong Stadium in Vientiane Capital on Nov 5.
The Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2016 started on November 5, 2016 and will run through January 8, 2017. Games will be played in each of the five Mekong countries.
The winners of the local leagues in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam will represent their respective countries and vie for the championship title in the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2016.
While Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam battle for a semi-final spot, Cambodia will go straight to the semi-final as it was runner-up at last year’s tournament. Similarly, Thailand will proceed directly to the finals as it was the overall champion in 2015.
The winner of the first round will face off against Cambodia in the semi-final. The winner will then go up against Thailand in the finals to vie for the 2016 Toyota Mekong Club Championship title.
This means that the winning team of the semi-final match will play against Thailand on January 4, 2017 in its home country and on January 8, 2017 in Thailand.
On December 27, the Lanexang United FC will face the Yadanarbon FC team from Myanmar.
