Lao-Chinese bilateral trade increases by 28.2%

Last year, bilateral trade between Laos and China reached 4.35 billion dollars, rising 21.4% year on year, with imports from China reaching 1.67 billion dollars, up by 11.9%.

China ranked the first largest export market for the Lao PDR with exports from Laos estimated at 2.68 billion dollars, up by 28.2% year on year, according to Vice President of the Laos-China Cooperation Committee Xaysana Sitthiphone.

The Lao-Chinese Cooperation Committee held a virtual meeting on Feb 10 to review cooperation between Laos and China on economic, trade and technical fields over the past one year.

Over 80,000 tonnes of goods have been transported on the Laos-China Railway since the railway was launched on Dec 2, 2021. The railway launch has created favourable conditions for boosting bilateral trade between Laos and China.

China remained the largest investor in Laos with investment by Chinese companies between 1989 and 2021 reached 821 projects.

Last year, the investment by Chinese companies reached over 1 billion dollars, represented in 20 projects.

Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Laos-China Cooperation Committee Sonexay Siphandone urged relevant authorities to promote the export of agricultural products to China and pay attention to ensuring Laos-China cooperation projects and China-funded projects, especially those on Covid-19 prevention are implemented effectively.
