Laos and Cambodia will build a 145-metre bridge across the Xe Lamphao River from Mounlapamok district of Champassak Province to Thapeua sub-district (Taseng) of Cambodia’s Preah Vihear Province.
The plan was discussed on January 27 by high-ranking officials from Laos and Cambodia. Two delegations went to survey the bridge construction area around the Xe Lamphao River.
The Lao delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Sengphet Houngbounyuang, and the Cambodian side was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (northern Cambodia) Mr Long Visalo.
A 78-kilometre road linking Mounlapamok district to Xe Lamphao bridge is also being planned according to an agreement made between the prime ministers of the two countries in June of last year.
The construction of the bridge linking Laos and Cambodia will expand integration on communication, trade and the promotion of tourism between the two countries and also enhance cooperation at the local level.
The bridge will also contribute to the improvement of living conditions for local people along the common border between Laos and Cambodia.
To strengthen friendship and cooperation, the two countries also opened consulates in their respective countries, with the Lao consulate located in Stung Treng Province of Cambodia, and the Cambodian consulate opened in Champassak Province of Laos last year.
