Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sengphet Houngbounyuang, accompanied by senior officials signed on Jun 22 at the German Embassy in Vientiane a book of condolences for the former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Helmut Kohl.
Mr Sengphet Houngbounyuang wrote:
We have learned with profound sadness over the passing of the former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Helmut Kohl, on Jun 16, 2017.
On behalf of the government and people of the Lao PDR, we would like to express our deep condolences to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as to the family of the former Chancellor Helmut Kohl who had been serving as Germany’s leader for 16 years and had made a hug contribution to the political and economic reunification of the country as well as Europe’s integration.
Helmut Kohl, who served as German chancellor from 1982 to 1998, had been called father of reunification. He was modern Germany’s longest serving chancellor, coinciding with the tearing down of the Berlin Wall that separated the communist East from the capitalist West.
Mr Kohl was chancellor of then West Germany between 1982 and 1990, and of the reunified Germany between 1990 and 1998.
