LAOS: LAOS SEES DECLINE IN FOREIGN TOURISTS IN 2017

VIENTIANE, The number of foreign tourists to Laos totalled 3.86 million in 2017, a drop of 8.73 per cent compared to 2016, China’s Xinhua news agency reported according to statistics from the Tourist Development Department under Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.

Tourists from Europe dropped by 27 per cent to 161,192, while those from the Americas declined by 26 percent to 64,227 in 2017, the local daily quoted data from the ministry as saying on Wednesday.

Tourists from the nine other ASEAN member countries dropped by 11 percent to 2.74 million, while overall visitors from the Asia-Pacific region fell by 7 per cent to 3.63 million.

Tourists from nearby countries including Thailand, the largest source of foreign tourists for Laos, declined by 11 per cent or more than 200,000 people.

Meanwhile, tourists from Japan and South Korea, who are typically big spenders, fell by 35 per cent to 32,064 and by 2 per cent to 170,571, respectively.
