Laos, Vietnam celebrate Solidarity and Friendship Year

Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee and State President Thongloun Sisoulith joined Politburo member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) and permanent member of CPVCC’s Secretariat Vo Van Thuong in a grand meeting to celebrate the Laos-Vietnam, Vietnam-Laos Solidarity and Friendship Year 2022 in Vientiane on Jul 18.

Politburo member and Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh, Politburo member and President of the National Assembly Xaysomphone Phomvihane, and other high-ranking Party and government officials also attended the event along with over 1,000 police and armed force personnel, students, representatives of youth unions and relevant authorities of Laos and Vietnam.

“Today, the Parties, governments and peoples of Laos and Vietnam are holding grand meetings to celebrate “Laos-Vietnam, Vietnam-Laos Solidarity and Friendship Year” simultaneously in their respective countries to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Laos-Vietnam Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic ties as well as the history of the birth of the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam, Vietnam and Laos,” said President Thongloun.

The President recalled the deeds of beloved leaders President Ho Chi Minh, President Kaysone Phomvihane and President Souphanouvong, who gave birth to and explicitly nurtured and strengthened the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.

“Laos and Vietnam are neighbours connected by long ranges of natural mountains and rivers. People of the two countries not only enjoy a peaceful life together but also fought fiercely against the aggression, invasion, and control of foreign imperialists and feudalist regimes, seizing for their respective countries independence from imperialist and feudalist administrations,” said President Thongloun.

President highlighted the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh in founding Indochina Communist Party in 1930 to lead the struggle of peoples of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia to victory including the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in September 1945, the announcement of Laos’ independence in October 1945 and the well-known Dien Bien Phu victory which led to the signing of Geneva Agreement in 1954 which recognised the independence and sovereignty of the three Indochinese countries.

He noted that the fighting side by side and mutual assistance between Laos and Vietnam secured growth for revolutionary movements in Laos, creating favourable conditions for the establishment of the Lao People’s Party on March 22, 1955 which was led by President Kaysone Phomvihane.

The establishment of diplomatic ties on September 5, 1962, is a landmark in the relations between the two countries resulted from the politic, diplomatic, and military struggles of revolutionary forces of Laos and Vietnam.

After achieving national liberation, the two Parties and governments of Laos and Vietnam signed “Treaty of Amity and Cooperation on July 18, 1977 in line with international law.

The signing explicitly testified and demonstrated that the revolutionary achievements, will and aspiration of people of the two countries had deepened the unique relations between Laos and Vietnam for the benefits of people of the two countries, and had contributed to the protection and strengthening of peace in the Southeast Asia region and in the world.

PCC’s Secretary General and State President Thongloun expressed on behalf of the Party, government and people of Laos sincere gratitude to the fraternal Party, government and people of Vietnam for their priceless, prompt and effective assistance for Laos’ national liberation cause in the past and for its national protection and development in the present day.

Delivering remarks at the meeting, the Vietnamese Politburo member Vo Van Thuong stated, “Nothing can change the relations between Vietnamese and Lao people, great comrades of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party had gone through decades of hardship, sharing happiness and suffering together, fighting together, defeating invading enemies together, extending help to each other for the national protection and development cause.”

He appreciated the great, comprehensive and historic achievements the fraternal Party, government and people of Laos have made over the past 35 years of renovation, and the major achievements in implementing the resolution of the 11th National Congress.

“We believe that under the leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the management of the government, the supervision of the National Assembly, and the building on the achievements and priceless lessons of the 35 years of renovation, the Lao people will achieve in implementing the resolution of the 11th National Congress of the Party, thus building a peaceful, independent, democratic, harmonious and prosperous Laos in line with the socialist goal, and the role and position of the Lao PDR will unstoppably rise in the regional and international arena,” said Vo Van Thuong.
