VIENTIANE, Laos, The Vientiane International Airport Terminal Expansion Project is expected to be fully completed in June and opened for operation in July, Lao news agency (KPL) reported according to Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The project, implemented under a low-interest loan from the Japanese government, has shown significant progress with some parts already completed and started utilisation for international passenger terminal; while domestic terminal is also being rebuilt with larger space and will be more convenient to use.
The expansion project, currently 80 per cent completed, is to meet increasing demand of air passengers and ensure Laos is better integrated into regional air service industry, said project manager Sengsanguan Chanthavong.
Wattay airport expansion also includes the increase of jet ways from three to six, six escalators, carousels, and facilities to ensure the airport can better accommodate Boeing 747s.
Once the expansion is fully completed, the airport will be able to accommodate up to three million passengers annually from currently merely one million.
