The Lao edition of Lee Kuan Yew’s book “From Third World to First” – The Singapore Story 1965-2000 was officially launched in Vientiane Capital on Jan 13.
The launch coincided with the state visit of Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam.
The book was launched in the presence of Singapore’s Minister of State for Manpower Teo Ser Luck, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of Laos Savankhone Razountry, Singapore Ambassador to Laos Dominic Goh, Lao Ambassador to Singapore Khonepheng Thammavong, relevant officials and diplomatic corps.
At the event, Minister of State Teo Ser Luck spoke highly of the contribution made by the Lao government, especially the Lao Writers’ Association and the Singaporean Embassy in Vientiane to the successful translation of the book.
He said that in translating this book into Lao language, important lessons of Singapore’s development experiences can be tapped by Lao leaders, officials and the general public.
“It is a great honour and pleasure for me to attend the launching of the Lao translation of the book entitled ‘From third World to First’ by Lee Kuan Yew, the most eminent statesman of Singapore,” Mr Savankhone.
He noted that the event was taking place during an official state visit to Lao PDR by Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Tam. Thus, I strongly hope that this book will serve to promote friendly and cooperative relations and mutual understanding between Laos and Singapore.
“The book tells about the rich experience of Lee Kuan Yew in building Singapore, as well as the events that happened in Southeast Asia from 1950 to 2000 in the twentieth century. The book also tells about Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his cabinet solving difficult and challenging problems facing Singapore, a beautiful and tiny country with a mixture of nationalities, religions, languages and cultures, but without natural resources,” said Mr Savankhone.
As the first Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew was able to build and transform an undeveloped country of the third world to an advanced country of the first world and changed Singapore into a world economic hub within only three decades.
“From Third World to First” is a memoir written by Singapore’s first Prime Minister and founding father Mr Lee Kuan Yew. The book is Mr Lee’s personal account of the tremendous efforts behind Singapore’s dramatic transformation from a British colonial trading post into the prosperous Southeast Asian metropolis it is today, according to Ambassador to Laos Dominic Goh.
Around 2,000 copies of the book will be published in total for the initial print run. Persons interested in purchasing the book can contract the Lao Writer’s Association.
