On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the people of the Kingdom of Lesotho on the 50th anniversary of your nation’s independence.
The United States deeply values its friendship with Lesotho. Together, our two nations have worked hard to promote economic progress, strengthen democratic institutions, and turn the tide in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 2016, Lesotho became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to adopt the “Test and Treat” approach to HIV/AIDS, an approach that will ensure that larger numbers of HIV-positive Basotho are able to live longer and more productive lives.
The United States looks forward to helping as Lesotho builds on the impressive gains made during the past half century and to forging an even stronger partnership with your country in years to come. On this special day, I offer my best wishes to you along with my hopes for a healthy, safe, and prosperous year to come.
