The Lao lottery is only going to be held on Mondays and Thursdays, a reduction from three times per week in the past.
The lottery, which claims to raise funds for development, will no longer take place on Wednesday as a result of a notice from the Prime Minister’s Office and a recent agreement reached between the Ministry of Finance and the Executive Board of the Lao Lottery Development Enterprise.
The decision to suspend the lottery was reached as a result of numerous complaints from members of society and on social media. Complaints have claimed that the lottery leads to other social ills including gambling and feelings of insecurity that are caused when one considers how much better their life would be if only they had more money.
Complaints have also suggested that the drawing is not transparent because it is not shown live on TV.
The lottery is operated and controlled by the Lao Lottery Development Enterprise.
