(KPL) The malaria has claimed 19 lives with over 6,000 cases reported in 2018, according to the Department of Communicable Disease Control, Ministry of Health.
The annual meeting of the department was told on Jan 2 that around 10,067 malaria cases were reported and about 14 lives were claimed by malaria in 2017.
Attapeu ranks first with the highest number of malaria infection cases, followed by Vientiane Capital, Champassak and Savannakhet.
The Ministry of Health will strengthen surveillance system, focusing on health education to promote community participation, and encourage the cooperation of relevant authorities at all levels, said Dr Phouthone Meaungpak, Deputy Minister of Health.
In 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 90 countries around the world.
Malaria deaths reached 435,000 in 2017.
Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.
