Malaysian Ambassador to the Lao PDR Mr. Mohd Aini Atan met with Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Dr. Khampheng Saysompheng to inform the minister that the Malaysian government has provided USD100,000 as relief aid for flood victims in Laos.
Malaysian non-government organisations have been also active in providing relief aid for the flood victims in Laos, according to Mr. Mohd Aini Atan.
The collapse of the Xepian-Xe Nam Noy dam in late July caused severe flooding in downstream Sanamxay district, Attapeu province. The flooding has claimed dozens of lives and left almost hundred people missing and more than 7,000 people displaced or homeless.
Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia presented a cheque amounting to USD100,000 to Lao Ambassador to Malaysia Houmdaphone Soukhaseum on Aug 30, 2018.
In his remarks, the Malaysia foreign minister expressed Malaysia’s deepest condolences to the government and people of the Lao PDR, especially to the victims and bereaved families.
He also emphasised Malaysia’s continuous support for the Lao PDR and expressed hope that the contribution will assist the Lao PDR to facilitate its relief efforts and more importantly to restore damaged basic necessities in a speedy manner.
