Mekong-Lancang Week 2019 Launched

A Mekong-Lancang Week 2019 was launched on Mar 14 in Vientiane Capital with an aim to promote practical cooperation among people of the six countries namely China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.

Supported by the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund, the six countries have implemented hundreds of small and medium-sized cooperation projects, making great contributions to the economic and social development of the basin.

The Mekong-Lancang Week 2019 was opened by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongphane Savanphet and Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong.

The Lao PDR attaches great importance to the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation. The close friendship and cooperation between Mekong countries and China have rapidly and consistently developed over the past three years, especially through the implementation of the Sanya Declaration, the Phnom Penh Declaration, five-Year Plan of Action on MLC (2018-2022), the Early Harvest Projects, MLC Special Fund Projects, the Brightness Journey, the Poverty Reduction project (33 million RMB) among others, said Mr Thongphane Savanphet.

All of these efforts have contributed significantly to the socio-economic development and well-being of people in the Mekong region as well as the building of new initiative on MLC Economic Development Belt, the attainment of the ASEAN community building, the realization of Belt and Road Initiative and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, said Mr Thongphane.

Since China and Laos acted as the co-chairmanship last year, the development of Mekong-Lancang cooperation has accelerated to another high level. The Fourth Term of Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting was successfully held, and the first Secretariat training activities had made remarkable achievements as well, said Mr Jiang Zaidong.

Water Resources Forum, Productive Capacity Cooperation Forum and Global Mekong Research Center Forum have been launched one after another. Mekong-Lancang cooperation “make progresses every day, make achievements every month, and step up every year”. We are all participants and promoters of Mekong-Lancang cooperation. We hope that we can make good use of Mekong-Lancang Week and have deep exchanges so as to offer advice for the promotion of Mekong-Lancang cooperation, said Mr Jiang Zaidong.

Under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Mechanism, nearly 800 cataract patients in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar have recovered from blind, and more than 6,000 young students have been screened of vision and obtained free eye-sighted glasses by the “Bright Mekong River” event sponsored by China.

In the past two years, more than 12,000 Mekong students have received scholarships from Chinese government, and more than 3,000 employed staff have gone to China for carrying out research and training. Mekong-Lancang University Friendship Games, Lanxang-Mekong Youth Leaders Cultural Experience Camp and Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Camp were successfully held with unusual highlight.

All of these events have greatly enhanced the exchanges and interactions among people of the six countries, and promoted and inherited the Mekong-Lancang friendship.

Representatives of foreign diplomats from the six countries will also participate in the friendly football matches this week to deepen the friendship, thus further demonstrate the Mekong-Lancang’s spirit of cooperation and vitality.
