National Economic Research Institute Urged To Conduct Studies, Keep Government Up To Date

(KPL) The government has urged the Lao National Economic Research Institute to conduct studies and suggest solutions beneficial to the socio economic development and keep the government up to date.

At the cabinet monthly meeting held on Feb 20-21, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith assigned the National Economic Research Institute to conduct a study on the use of hydropower energy and minerals to best benefit the socio-economic development, reassess the establishment of special economic zones across the country with a focus placed on the pros and cons of the establishment, and review the poverty reduction of the people and sustainable development.

The prime minister urged the institute to assess the enterprise development policy and the promotion of commercial production of local people using modern cooperative approach and evaluate the implementation of the policy on putting an end to deforestation and slash and burn cultivation practices.

The cabinet members also urged all relevant sectors to translate into practice the agreements made at the recently held Laos-Vietnam inter-politburo meeting and the 40th meeting of the Laos-Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee and make sure that the future assistance from Vietnam are focused on boosting the socio-economic development and poverty reduction, especially in remote areas.

The government has instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, especially the Laos-China Railway Project Management Committee to continue to work with Chinese authorities to make sure the railway construction is completed as planned and cooperate with provinces and provincial people’s councils to finish paying compensations to people affected by the railway project as soon as possible.
