On Friday, September 3, 2021 more than 11,000 Shanghai University freshmen students, both foreign and Chinese, attended an opening ceremony of academic year 2021-2022.
Established in 1922, Shanghai University now ranks 16th among Chinese mainland universities in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). It is the first university founded by the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Phetsamone Phommouny, a new PhD candidate from Laos said that, ‘I chose to study international trade, because it keeps me up-to-date information on domestic and international economics, trade and investment and I also hold master’s degree in International Trade’.
Phetsamone further added “Since the Laos–China Railway Project will operate soon by the end of this year, I want to take this opportunity to promote trade and investment between two sisterly countries.”
She expressed her gratitude to the Chinese government and her organization – the Lao News Agency – for offering her the opportunity to pursue her PhD study.
Similarly, Jill TsistsiMujaji, a new PhD candidate from Zimbabwe said that, ‘I chose Shanghai University because of the diverse courses I am offered in my programme. The university has professors from different parts of the world that offer nothing less but the best analysis in their different fields of study. As a PHD student doing Global studies, I believe such diversity will make me understand the world from different perspectives. Also Shanghai University has beautiful gardens and convenient libraries which make the environment very friendly, relaxing and conducive for university students to engage in their different studies’.
Shanghai University has more than 30 colleges and over 3,000 staff members. College of Economics, especially international trade, is the most popular major for foreign students. This academic year, almost 500 international students from 97 countries, including 234 undergraduates, 196 masters, and 49 doctoral students are enrolled in the university.
