Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith on March 17 took part the gathering of Australian alumni who used to study in ASEAN member states under the New Colombo Plan and former ASEAN students who used to study in Australia and Australian government’s scholarship alumni.
Chaired by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Australian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, the event was also joined by government leaders and foreign ministers of other ASEAN member countries.
On this occasion, Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, an Australian scholarship alumnus representing ASEAN delivered remarks on the importance of education to the cooperation and relations between ASEAN and Australia.
The meeting provided opportunity to Prime Minister Thongloun to meet former Australian students who used to have internship in Laos and Lao awardees of Australian government’s scholarships.
Prime Minister Thongloun and Foreign Minister Saleumxay also witnessed the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strengthening cooperation to counter international terrorism.
The document will be a strong foundation for the counter terrorism cooperation between ASEAN and Australia in the future thus contributing to the protection and promotion of peace, stability and security in the region and the world.
Prime Minister also met ASEAN and Australian business people and took part in a reception dinner hosted by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in honour of ASEAN leaders.
