(KPL) In a joint ceremony held on Mar 18, IT equipment was handed over for Provincial People’s Councils at the National Assembly of the Lao PDR by Pamela Jawad, GIZ Programme Director of CEGGA.
The equipment was received by Dr Bounthanh Bounvilay, Head of the National Assembly International Cooperation and Project Management Secretariat in the presence of German Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Jens Luetkenherm and Suanesavanh Vignaket, Standing Committee Member and Secretary General of the Secretariat Affairs Committee of the National Assembly together with Directors General and Deputy Directors General of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“Citizen Engagement for Good Governance, Accountability and Rule of Law” (CEGGA) is a joint initiative of the Lao PDR, the European Union, Germany and Switzerland.
It builds on previous engagements of the three European Development Partners with the National Assembly of the Lao PDR and extends to capacity development support of Provincial People’s Councils and strengthening the representative role of Members of Parliament.
The equipment was procured by Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as part of the Technical Cooperation Programme supporting an increased efficiency, responsiveness and effectiveness of PPAs.
During the ceremony Jens Luetkenherm, Ambassador of Germany to the Lao PDR acknowledged the effort of the National Assembly in sharing their experiences and transferring their knowledge to PPAs as well as the efforts of PPAs to reach out to citizens and to hold public hearings to learn about issues and concerns of local communities in their provinces. He expressed his strong belief that constructive interactions between the state and its people will contribute to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and includes everybody to benefit from achievements.
Ms. Suanesavanh Vignaket, Standing Committee Member, Secretary General of the Secretariat Affairs Committee of the National Assembly as representative of the National Assembly of Laos highlighted her gratitude to GIZ and CEGGA donors for this support which will contribute to an improved effective and efficient performance of the PPAs in their mandates. The National Assembly is looking forward to continuing the fruitful cooperation between National Assembly of the Lao PDR and the Government of Germany, the EU and Switzerland.
