Red Cross Day Witnesses 1,000 Turning Out For Blood Drive

(KPL) More than 1,000 students and representatives of mass organizations and government bodies turned out on May 8 for a blood drive held at Vientiane Center, a high end shopping centre of Vientiane Captal, to mark the 156th anniversary of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2019.

The event was organized by the Lao Red Cross Society Blood Transfusion Centre in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent IFRC.

Our blood donation activity aims to encourage students and all sectors to donate blood for social benefits, said Dr Chanthala Souksakhone, Head of the Lao Red Cross Society National Blood Transfusion Centre.

In the Lao PDR, although the number of blood donors rises annually, it is necessary to have at least 60,000 people giving blood every year. However, only 44,000 people donate blood on an annual basis.

Blood donation is needed especially for patients with anemia, kidney failure, hemorrhage, operations, dengue fever and those undergoing road accidents, according to Dr Chanthala.

This year, we expect to see 55,000 people giving blood. These include 23,000 people from the capital city and 32,000 from provinces.

In the first three months of this year, more than 13,000 people gave blood.

Last year, more than 50,000 people donated blood. Over 20,600 out of these donors were from the capital city. The rest 28,400 were from provinces.
