Over 100 representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, development partners, international organisations, embassies, the government and private organisations met in Vientiane on May 31 to discuss a national action plan on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through 2030.
The meeting is of importance as it provides an opportunity for the government and development partners to discuss the implementation of development goals in the Lao PDR, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongphane Savanhphet.
Discussions at the meeting focused on raising the awareness and participation of all relevant sectors with respect to the incorporation of the millennium development goals in the central and local development plans,as well as the Sustainable Development Action Plan 2030.
Lecturers from the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the National Statistics Bureau presented participants with reportson the national indicators of SDGs.
Over recent years, the government has made efforts in incorporating all 17 millennium development goals in the 8th Five-year National Social-Economic Development Plan and the approved specific-to-Laos Sustainable Development Goal � SDG 18 Lives safe from UXO�which aims to address the poverty of people of all ethnic groups and to enable the country to graduate from its current least developed country status by 2020 and become a middle-to-high income nation by 2030, said Mr Thongphane.
To achieve the targets, the government, private sectors, international organisations and development partners need to promote development cooperation using existing potentials and resources in an effective manner to ensure all people have access to development and better living conditions, added Mr Khamphane.
The meeting also saw the presence of UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Kaarina Immonen and Director of the Department of International Organisations Anouphap Vongnokeo.
