Thai company to conduct feasibility study into the development of a 1,000MW wind farm in Xekong

Thai renewable energy company Impact Energy Asia Limited (IEA) has signed with the Government of the Lao PDR a Memorandum of Understanding on conducting a feasibility study into the development of a 1,000MW wind farm in Dak Cheung, Xekong Province (Xekong Wind Farm).

The MoU was signed by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Khamchanh Vongsenboun and President of Impact Energy Asia Limited (IEA) Paradai Suebma and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sinava Souphanouvong, Director General of the Xekong Provincial Department of Planning and Investment Sakon Phonepaseuth and CEO of Impact Electrons Siam Limited (IES) Voramol Khamkhanit.

The project is expected to be developed by Impact Electrons Siam Limited (IES), an affiliate of IEA, which is at an advanced stage of development of the 600MW Monsoon Wind Farm in the same area and for which it recently signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Vietnam Electricity, according to Energy News Center.

“IEA appreciates the support of the Lao government and for the latter entrusting IEA to develop this further important project. Given the project’s strategic location, wind resource, and the strong support of the Lao government, IES is confident that the Xekong Wind Farm will be swiftly implemented to supply clean energy to ASEAN,” said Paradai Suebma.

The Xekong Wind Farm, together with the Monsoon project, will have a total capacity of 1,600MW which is one of the world largest wind farm. Together they will provide over 90 million tons of carbon saving over the project life, a meaningful contribution of to global fight against climate change as well as a complementary contribution to Laos’ Battery of Asia policy.
