The United Nations Children’s Fund to Laos, European Union and other partners will further support the nutrition in target districts in Saravane Province, aiming to give children aged under 5 access to nutrition.
In the past, the malnutrition rate of children under the age of 5 in Saravane Province was higher than other provinces in Laos, according to Phouphong Khammanyvong, Vice Governor of Saravane Province.
In 2015, the malnutrition rate of children under the age of 5 in Saravane Province dropped to 43 percent from 54 percent, the rate of underweight children dropped 37 percent from 41 percent, and the instance of child malnutrition decreased from 15 percent to 9 percent, according to Mr Phouphong.
A workshop on nutrition dissemination held on Jun 20 in Saravane Province and co-chaired by Phouphong Khammanyvong, Vice Governor of Saravane Province and Chandavone Phoxay, Deputy Director-General, Hygiene-Health Promotion.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Health Department of Saravane Province and international organisations.
The purpose of the meeting was to build capacity of officials in Saravane province on nutrition and involve the province in discussions on nutrition and the national strategic plan 2016-2025.
