The Vientiane International Airport Terminal Expansion Project is expected to be fully completed in June and opened for usual operation in July this year.
The project, implemented under a low-interest loan from the Japanese government, has shown significant progress with some parts already completed and started utilization for international passenger terminal; while domestic terminal is also being rebuilt with larger space and will be more convenient to use, according to Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The expansion project, currently 80 percent completed, is to meet increasing demand of air passengers and ensure Laos is better integrated into regional air service industry, according to Project Manager Sengsanguan Chanthavong.
We previously estimated that the number of passengers would reach 1.5 million in 2025. However the current number of passengers already reaches the expected figure. Therefore it is necessary to renovate and expand the international terminal and rebuild domestic terminal to cope with increasing number of air passengers, said Mr Sengsanguan.
Commenced in 2012, the expansion includes the increase of immigration booths for outbound passengers from 8 to 13 and for inbound passengers from 8 to 15, the installation of 11 escalators and installing 9 more elevators.
Wattay airport expansion also includes the increase of the number of jet ways from 3 to six, the equipment of 11 escalators, two more carousels (totally 4), and facilities to ensure the airport can better accommodate large airplanes such as Boeing 747s.
The expansion also includes the building of new hangar and a taxiway, and the improvement of access road to parking areas and other facilities.
The expansion will ensure the airport can accommodate up to 3 million passengers annually and around 700 passengers per rush hour (10.00-13.00).
