Azerbaijani journalist’s murderers sentenced to prison terms

The Baku Court of Grave Crimes has delivered a verdict on the murderers of Azerbaijani journalist Rasim Aliyev.

Elshan Ismayilov has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, Arif Aliyev – to 12.5 years, Jamal Mammadov – to 11 years, Samir Mustafayev and Kanan Madatov – to nine years each.

Rasim Aliyev, who was working for the Ann.az website, was beaten and as a result he sustained multiple injuries on Aug. 8, 2015. He died in a clinical medical center the following day.

The Baku City Prosecutor’s Office filed a criminal case against Elshan Ismayilov, Arif Aliyev, Jamal Mammadov, Samir Mustafayev and Kanan Madatov over the journalist’s murder.

The former captain of Azerbaijani soccer club Gabala, Javid Huseynov, was also detained as a suspect in Rasim Aliyev’s murder.

There were serious grounds to believe that Javid Huseynov was aware of the crime planned by his cousin Elshan Ismayilov and concealed this information.
