Representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the International Labour Organisation, and the Australian and Canadian embassies met in Vientiane to discuss digitalization of migrant worker management and digital services to migrant workers in Laos.
Held on Oct 18, the Lao Triangle Preparatory Workshop provided the participants the opportunity to take stock on the progress made by stakeholders in implementing the previous ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour recommendations and discuss the themes of the 11th AFML to be held in Singapore by the end of this month.
The outcome of the preparatory workshop will be submitted to the 11th AFML.
Recently, the Lao PDR has begun developing a website which can help unemployed people find available jobs. Workers will be able to access and use modern technology to find jobs, said Ms Anouson Khamsingsavath, Director General of the Department of Skills Development and Employment, Ministry of Laobour and Social Welfare.
This is a new step we have made to put in place modern digital and manageable system for migrant worker management. Digitalisation of migrant labour management among new ASEAN members is yet to be satisfactorily developed, said Ms Anouson.
The 11th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour will be held on Oct 29-30, 2018 in Singapore. It will be hosted by the Government of Singapore as the current chair of the ASEAN and the ASEAN Committee on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers.
In line with Singapore’s 2018 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of Resilience and Innovation, the 11th AFML will focus on digistalisation to promote decent work for migrant workers in ASEAN.
To ensure that discussions will be focused and targeted, the 11th AFML will be further scoped into two sub-themes: Digitalisation of Migrant Labour Management, and Digital Services to Migrant Workers.
