Held virtually between Jul 6-8, the 1st Open Meeting of the 9th Government was concluded successfully with the government appreciated for its relatively successful efforts in handling the Covid-19 pandemic over the past six months.
The meeting was held to review the performance of the government over the past six months and its priorities for the second half of the year.
Chaired by Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh, the meeting saw the participation of cabinet members, provincial governors, Vientiane Mayor, and representatives of Party and state organizations.
The participants noted that over the past six months the country has enjoyed political stability, social peace with the national economy continuing to grow as planned.
The government appreciated all sectors in the society upon their contribution to fighting Covid-19 and mitigating its social and economic impacts.
Cabinet members, provincial governors were urged to continue to attach importance to addressing Covid-19 related issues in an urgent, strict and decisive manner, implement the guidelines of the government and those of the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control in a creative manner, ensure all infected are detected so that they can be treated promptly, and minimize the number of deaths from Covid-19.
The meeting urged the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare to work with relevant sectors to come up with a plan on response, rescue and rehabilitation measures for natural disasters that may take place in the months to come.
Priorities for the last six months of the year were also discussed and approved.
These include the maintaining of political stability and social disorder to create favourable conditions for national development, ensuring economic stability, supervision and promotion of the Laos-China Railway Construction Project and related projects, the Lao-Thai Railway Project phase II, and other major projects.
The national agenda on addressing narcotic drugs, and the maintenance of economic stability were also highlighted as a priority for the last six months along with the addressing of economic and finance difficulties with a focus placed on the implementation of the national agenda on addressing economic and finance difficulties through state budget efficiency, improved investment promotion mechanisms, and modernized revenue collection and spending management.
