Lao-French Bilingual Teachers Trained On Teaching Maths, Sciences

(KPL) A signing ceremony was held on Oct 3 at the Ministry of Education and Sports to officially launch a project on upgrading the teaching of mathematics and other science subjects for Lao-French bilingual classes.

Supported by the French embassy in Vientiane, the project is in line with the government’s plan on educational quality improvement.

The MOU, signed by Ms Sisouk Vongvichit, Director General, Department of General Education, Ministry of Education and Sports, and Mr. Patrick Cohen, Head of Cooperation at the French Embassy to the Lao PDR, aims to provide new educational materials for the teaching and learning of science subjects including textbooks, stationery, and ICT, and organize professional development sessions and training for in-service teachers.

This new project will not only give a fresh start to students and new resources to in-service teachers of secondary schools, but also benefit the new batch of 28 students who have just been enrolled in the NUOL’s faculty of education to become tomorrow’s bilingual mathematics and science teachers, said Ms Sisouk Vongvichit.

This project is a great asset for the French-Lao bilingual classes as it aims to further enhance the teaching practices and improve students’ academic performance.

The twenty-year-old Lao-French bilingual section has now grown significantly to reach a nationwide coverage with 13 public schools in Vientiane, Savannakhet, Pakse and Luang Prabang.

Today, 3,000 students, aged 8 to 18, benefit from improved teaching of French language and science subjects, including mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, in French.

Mr Patrick Cohen said that the already successful bilingual programme will undoubtedly become even more attractive to students, parents and teachers.

He also said that French scholarship programme 2020 will be launched next January. All information related to the programme will be available online, on the Facebook Pages of Campus France Laos (@campusfrance.laos).
