Vientiane: A ceremony celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between Laos and Cuba was held in Vientiane on November 4, 2024. The event was graced by the presence of President Thongloun Sisoulith and Cuban Politburo Member Esteban Lazo Hernández, who also serves as the President of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba.
According to Lao News Agency, the ceremony featured speeches from Mr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of Laos, and Mr. Esteban Lazo Hernández. Both leaders highlighted the enduring cooperation between the two nations, which has been grounded in friendship and solidarity since the revolutionary period of Laos’ struggle for national independence in the 1960s and 70s.
The strong diplomatic bond between Laos and Cuba has flourished across various sectors, despite the geographical distance. Cuba’s contributions have been significant, providing medical teams, Spanish language educators, and sports instructors to Laos. Such support has been instrumental in
enhancing Laos’ human resources, with many Lao citizens now serving in key governmental and party positions.
Laos conveyed its gratitude for the strengthening collaboration between the national assemblies of both countries. They have successfully implemented a memorandum on legislative cooperation, which has facilitated parliamentary exchange visits, consultations, and knowledge sharing.
The two countries continue to support each other in regional and international arenas, such as AIPA and IPU, and are committed to expanding cooperation in fields like economics, trade, health, education, and agriculture. The celebration was further enriched by a photo exhibition, showcasing the deep-rooted friendship and shared history between Laos and Cuba.
