The Ministry of Education and Sports will continue its cooperation with the UK government to further the development of the country’s education sector.
The cooperation agreement was made during an official visit to Lao Minister of Education and Sports Ms. Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun by Head of the South East Asia Department Mr. John Virgoe, who is also the head of the department responsible for UK government policy in the ASEAN region.
Mr Virgoe was led by British Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Mr Hugh Evans.
During the meeting they discussed the education sector and future cooperation by the UK government specifically in assisting with English teaching and English language training for English language teachers around the country.
The UK government has been assisting in the education sector through various programmes for many years and has provided scholarships to Lao officials to study at UK universities.
Last year, the UK also provided eight scholarships to Lao students wanting to study one year courses at Master’s and PhD levels at leading UK universities.
The Chevening Scholarships scheme is the UK government’s official scholarship programme and is funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office along with partner organisations.
The prestigious programme awards outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses in the UK.
Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. It operates in 144 countries worldwide, awarding scholarships to exceptional students in these countries.
The programme offers a unique opportunity for awardees to build a global network of continuing professional significance, enabling talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK.
