Savannakhet University (SKU) has an ambitious plan to become a model university for business administration and economic studies in Laos by 2020.
Assoc. Prof. Bounpong Keorodom, president of the university, told a media team last week that the university will become a model in terms of schooling facilities, libraries, and curricula. The university has a 300 ha campus in Nongpheu village of Kaysone district.
The efforts of the university to become one of the best in Laos are being supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has given funds worth US$40 million, of which $23 million is a grant and the rest is a loan.
The government has already signed a contract with the bank and our model university is expected to be finished in 2020, or 2025 at the latest under the Ministry of Education and Sports, Assoc. Prof. Bounpong said.
Of the entire budget for the construction of the model university, 53 percent of both the grant and the loan from the bank will be invested in infrastructure, which will include new buildings and other facilities in line with modern universities in other countries.
The current university location has 291 staff, of whom 258 are lecturers; there are more than 4,120 students in six faculties with 33 undergraduate subjects and two master’s degree subjects, along with one IT centre.
The master’s degree programmes just opened over a year ago and the university will offer a further three to five master’s degree courses in 2020, after improvements have been completed.
When the new university is completed in 2020, it will be able to cater to a student population of 8,000.
